Self Defense Weapons Against - Grizzly Bears?

When it comes to self defense weapons against grizzly bears, the answer is not as obvious as it may seem. In fact, experienced hunters are surprised to find that despite the use of firearms against a charging bear, they were attacked and badly hurt. Evidence of human-bear encounters even suggests that shooting a bear can escalate the seriousness of an attack, while encounters where firearms are not used are less likely to result in injury or death of the human or the bear. While firearms can kill a bear, can a bullet kill quickly enough — and can the shooter be accurate enough — to prevent a dangerous, even fatal, attack?

The question is not one of marksmanship or clear thinking in the face of a growling bear, for even a skilled marksman with steady nerves may have a slim chance of deterring a bear attack with a gun. Law enforcement agents for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service have experience that supports this reality –

based on their investigations of human-bear encounters since 1992, persons encountering grizzlies and defending themselves with firearms suffer injury about 50% of the time. During the same period, persons defending themselves with best pepper spray escaped injury most of the time, and those that were injured experienced shorter duration attacks and less severe injuries. Canadian bear biologist Dr. Stephen Herrero reached similar conclusions based on his own research — a persons chance of incurring serious injury from a charging grizzly doubles when bullets are fired versus when bear spray is used.

Certain weather and habitat conditions may effect the use ofbest pepper spray. With wind there are two concerns: speed and direction. A strong side wind will blow the mist of spray to the side. A strong head wind will blow the spray back at you. Even a mild head wind may eventually expose you to spray if you do not leave the area. Rain may dilute some of the spray on wet bear fur. A heavy rain may wash out some of the mist from the air. Extreme heat or cold may reduce effectiveness.

Watch Out for that BEAR!

Awareness of bear behavior is the key to mitigating potential danger. Detecting signs of a bear and avoiding interaction, or understanding defensive bear behaviors, like bluff charges, are the best ways of escaping

injury. The Service supports the pepper spray policy of the Interagency Grizzly Bear Committee, which states that bear spray is not a substitute for following proper bear avoidance safety techniques, and that bear

spray should be used as a deterrent only in an aggressive or attacking confrontation with a bear.

Like seatbelts, bear spray saves lives. But just as seatbelts dont make driving off a bridge safe, bear spray is not a shield against deliberately seeking out or attracting a grizzly bear. No deterrent is 100% effective, but compared to all others, including firearms, proper use of bear spray has proven to be the best method for fending off threatening and attacking bears, and for preventing injury to the person and animal involved.

Class instructors started the class with a knowledge test. Questions on the test assessed how prepared participants were if or when a potential self defense weapons was to occur. Some of the questions asked were: Do we know our physical and mental limitations? Do we know the number one characteristic of violence in an encounter? In the event of an attack, what is the first strategy that comes to mind? and What is the best tactic to use if attacked?’

Myths and Facts about Rape

MYTH: Only the young or beautiful may be sexually assaulted.

FACT: Victim/survivors range in age from a few months to 90 years old and come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Rapists tend to choose victims for their perceived vulnerability and availability, without regard to their physical appearance. Attributing a self defense weapons to a victim/survivors attractiveness perpetuates the myth that rape is primarily motivated by sexual desire. This myth inappropriately places blame and responsibility onto the victim/survivor because of her/his physical attributes.

MYTH: When a woman says no, she might really mean, yes.

FACT: This myth is common in dating situations. When a person says no, that persons partner must assume she means nothing other than no. It is also vital to point out that if a person does not explicitly consent to an act of sex, in the form of a yes or similar phrasing, that person has not consented. Silence on a persons behalf must be taken as a no rather than consent. Rape is not just a matter of miscommunication, but communication is vital in sexual situations.
